Overview

Founded in 2020 by Laura McKowen, author and sobriety advocate, as an online sobriety support community that emerged during the pandemic when in-person recovery groups were inaccessible

The phrase “We are the luckiest” originated in 2014, early in Laura’s sobriety journey. While lying beside her daughter after achieving 30 consecutive sober days, she had a realization: sobriety was not deprivation, but a gift—and she felt “lucky” to be alive and present. This notion resonated deeply and became central to her memoir We Are the Luckiest: The Surprising Magic of a Sober Life, published in 2020.

After launching TLC in 2020, the community quickly grew. Early on, it hosted over 35 virtual weekly meetings and rapidly expanded its offerings. By late 2022, The Luckiest Club reported over 3,000 members globally, with 18 facilitators leading 27 weekly restoration meetings, along with 50+ in-person subgroups based on geography and interest—and even hosted its first live event, LUCKYCON, in Fall 2022.

Principles, Strategies, and Tools

The Five Core Practices of Sobriety

  1. Acceptance: Embracing yourself, others, and life as it is—without judgment.
  2. Honesty: Cultivating self-truthfulness and the courage to be transparent in recovery.
  3. Connection: Nurturing daily habits that foster emotional and communal support.
  4. Embodiment: Tuning into the mind-body relationship—using physical awareness as a tool for healing.
  5. Service: Engaging in both outward acts of kindness and caring inwardly for yourself through rest, play, and compassion.
