Dual Recovery Anonymous

Summary

Dual Recovery Anonymous is an independent, nonprofessional, twelve-step self-help organization designed for individuals with a dual diagnosis. Dual Recovery Anonymous defines “dual diagnosis” as meaning that an individual has two separate but very interrelated diagnoses:

  • A psychiatric diagnosis
  • A substance abuse diagnosis that may include both drugs and alcohol

The goal is to support those struggling with both chemical dependency and an emotional or psychiatric illness. These dual illnesses impact all areas of life — physical, psychological, social, and spiritual. DRA provides support for individuals dealing with these dual diagnoses, helping them manage and recover from both conditions.

Overview

Dual Recovery Anonymous World Services Inc. (DRAWS) was founded in 1989 in Kansas City to support individuals with dual recovery needs. The organization created a four-point program integrating the twelve steps, personal recovery experiences, and principles of personal freedom and choice. Over time, DRAWS expanded its reach, developed educational materials, and established an online presence. In 2002, DRAWS was formally incorporated to safeguard the founding principles of Dual Recovery Anonymous and to guide the DRA Fellowship.

The organization faced a significant challenge with the passing of its founder in 2013. A major revival effort began in 2020 when Charlie Adams was appointed to restart and relaunch DRAWS as a non-profit. This effort culminated in a collaboration with Jon Caldbeck in 2022, leading to the redevelopment of the draonline.org website. The updated site was launched in February 2023, marking a new chapter for DRAWS and its mission. Today there are approximately 200 Dual Recovery Anonymous meetings across the United States.
